Hatchet 3 film break-down (by Decker Shado)

Hatchet 3 was the film that was a horror in the Hatchet trilogy. It tells the story of Victor Crowley, his murderous rampage through Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. Kane Hodder plays Victor Crowley and Brian Quinn is Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanderbilt plays Misty.

Its use of special effects is the main strength of this movie. In contrast to many contemporary horror films which heavily rely on CG effects, Hatchet 3 features mostly realistic makeup effects and sets, resulting in some truly terrifying moments throughout the film.

The cast delivers a strong performance with Kane Hodder being the most intimidating villain. The dialogue is reminiscent of an 1980s slasher film. It is witty and funny enough. There are also several hilarious moments throughout that offer some humor in the midst of the terrifying action.

Unfortunately, because the budget is extremely limited (reportedly $1 million) the majority of locations used that are featured in the movie are re-used locations from earlier films in the series. For instance the same boathouse was featured twice in the film. Many of these locations feel like they were reused from previous films from this series. Hatchet or Hatchet II may be able to recognize it as familiar, and (blog) this could result in the movie feeling too familiar.

Overall, Hatchet 3 was an enjoyable series. I enjoyed the violent thrills it provided as well as the engaging performances by the actors.
